A Study of Fiber Tract Degeneration in a Case of an Acoustic Neuroma *
نویسنده
چکیده
The ability of the brain to maintain a considerable degree of normal function in the presence of tumor, and in spite of distortion and hydrocephaly, has always been a matter of interest. Such a condition is best seen with slowly growing masses, such as the acoustic neuromas. Recently, such a pathological condition has been encountered in a patient in the New Haven Hospital. After viewing the large tumor at the post-mortem examination and noting the extreme distortion of parts of the brain and the damage to the cranial nerves, considerable surprise was expressed at the apparent lack of correlation between the anatomical damage and the physiological impairment shown before death. It was felt, therefore, that a study of the fiber tracts of portions of the brain might yield some information, both as to the actual amount of degeneration and the localization of this damage. From the anatomical findings it was hoped that a correlation with the symptomatology might be made. In reviewing the literature, it has been impossible to find a complete anatomical study. It is proposed, therefore, to give (1) the clinical history and pathological findings, and (2) the anatomical findings with a discussion of their relation to the symptomatology.

Introduction: To report our experience with a large series of surgical procedures for removal of cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumors using different approaches. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of 50 patients (mean age, 49 years) with CPA tumors (predominantly acoustic neuroma) who underwent surgical removal using appropriate techniques (principally a translabyrinthine...
متن کاملImpact of Layout Sequence of the Natural and Synthetic Adsorbents in Double-Layered Composites on Improving the Natural Fiber Acoustic Performance Using the Numerical Finite Element Method
Introduction: The acoustic performance of natural fiber adsorbents has been investigated in numerous studies. A part of these materials show a poor adsorption within the frequency range of less than 1000 Hz. In the present study, attempts were made to investigate the effect of layout sequence of double-layered composites consisting of natural and synthetic fibers on improving the acoustic adsor...
متن کاملDesign and Application of a Photoacoustic Sensor for Monitoring the Laser Generated Stress Waves in Optical Fiber
Measurement of stress transients generated by a 400ns pulsed HF laser in an infrared fluoride glass fiber has been made using fast time – response piezoelectric film transducer. Acoustic signals up to 12 mV with frequencies ranging in megahertz generated by 21 mJ laser pulse when passed through the fiber axis in the linear region. It is shown that useful information such as onset of non - linea...

Anastasi S, Grech R. BMJ Case Rep 2017. doi:10.1136/bcr-2017-220212 Description A 30-year-old man underwent MRI of the internal auditory meatus as a routine follow-up after excision of a large left vestibular schwannoma, 2.5 years previously. MRI images showed an incidental finding of left hypertrophic olivary degeneration (figure 1 and figure 2). This phenomenon occurs as a result of Wallerian...
